Rippling Bullseye Cane Mokume Gane Technique

In this polymer clay tutorial I'll be showing you a cool variation on my ripple blade technique. This time I'll be using complex bullseye canes to create the effect.

This polymer clay technique is great fun and, depending on what ripple blade you use, you’ll get a different look, so it’s a widely versatile technique.

There are other canes you can make using the complex bullseye shown in this tutorial. I'll be showing those in a later tutorial.

You will need the following supplies:

  • White, Black, Translucent, Silver, Peacock Pearl, Bright Green Pearl Premo clay (any brand would work)
  • A ripple blade
  • An acrylic roller
  • A tissue blade
  • A pasta machine

Steps To The Rippling Bullseye Cane Mokume Gane Technique

  • To start, you’ll need to prepare your clay. You'll need each of your colors rolled through on your thickest pasta machine setting.

You will also need a Bright Green Pearl log as the core for your cane.

  • Now wrap your log with sheets of translucent alternating with sheets of the other colors to create a bulls eye cane. I wrapped in this order: translucent, black, translucent, peacock pearl, translucent, white, translucent, silver, translucent. Repeat this layering a second time so that you have two layers of each color wrapped around your core.
  • Reduce your cane until it has a diameter of around 5mm.
  • Chop the long cane into equal lengths of about 4cm.
  • Line up the canes alongside each other.
  • Flatten them out with your acrylic roller and then roll the sheet through the thickest setting on the pasta machine.
  • Cut the sheet in two.
  • Now you’re ready to use your ripple blade. You want to slice perpendicular to the long side of the canes. Hold your hand steady as you slice. You should be left with a geometric space like pattern.
  • Now take the other part of the sheet and repeat the previous process, but this time slice twice. First perpendicular to the long canes and then parallel to them. It will give a completely different look.
  • Flatten out both sheets and then they’ll be ready to use in any polymer clay project you wish.
And that's the Rippling Bullseye Mokume Gane polymer clay technique. Have fun playing around with different colors.
